Capricorn Horoscope for May 2013

This will be a big month, for we are in the middle of eclipse season, with three eclipses occurring in the space of only four weeks. The first one recently appeared last month on April 25, in Scorpio, and focused you on a friend. You may have been concerned about the welfare of this friend, or you may have felt troubled by your friend's behavior, possibly even causing a rift between the two of you.

That April 25 eclipse had mixed aspects, but it was conjunct Saturn, giving it a weighty, heavy, and even somber tone. It was a full moon, so it represented an ending or culmination. On Twitter, some readers reported difficulties, while other readers seem to have had good news. Full moon eclipses end things, and we remember those moments, long after the eclipse is over. We often feel sentimental at full moon eclipses, because something ends, and later, something else begins. With Saturn present, this same house ruling hopes and wishes may have caused you to put off doing something (or buying something) that you wanted very much. A delay is only temporary, dear Capricorn - it does not mean you will never have it.

You would have been more likely to feel the effects of the eclipse if you were born on December 27 plus or minus five days. Eclipses are important to watch, for they are capable of creating massive change. They provide a layer over all the planetary activity that is happening in the sky and they work on their own timetable, the reason that what they bring up often seems sudden or unexpected. Eclipses always fall on a new moon (solar) or full moon (lunar) and are very, very powerful. Typically we get four eclipses a year, five-and-a-half months apart, but this month we have three now, and later, two will come by in November. This happens when one family of signs is ending (which is happening now, in the Gemini-Sagittarius family) and a new one has started up (in Taurus-Scorpio). Two signs are always involved because they are linked on the same axis by standing 6 months away from each other. Said another way, these signs stand 180 degrees apart on the horoscope wheel.

The mission of a full moon lunar eclipse is always to create progress. Eclipses test the strength of your relationships and conditions connected to the part of the chart that is affected. The weak parts of your life are swept away very rapidly at eclipse time so that you can replace those elements later with stronger, more productive ones that will ultimately make you happier.

Solar eclipses are new moons, and work differently, because they most often bring good news by opening a new path. For that reason, solar eclipses are often very exciting. The two eclipses this month are mainly friendly to other planets, good news for all of us! Now, let's get into the detail of what you can expect in May.

You may have hit the cosmic lottery, because the friendly solar eclipse in Taurus, 20 degrees, due May 9 (US) and other time zones around the world on May 10, will perk up your romantic life quite a bit. This new moon will be very friendly and comes accompanied by Venus (love), Mercury (news), Mars (energy), and the Sun (authority, ego). That's a lot of planets to be packed into one small part of your chart! What matters the most is that Venus, Mercury, and Mars, each in Taurus, will all be friendly to your Capricorn Sun.

This eclipse in Taurus will have Mars orbiting close, instantly giving impetus and momentum to all that happens now. Pluto in Capricorn will also be in ideal angle to this eclipse, suggesting that you may be energized by all that happens, possibly even feeling completely renewed. If you are single, you may now meet someone special who may have an enormous impact on your life. This could be the moment you've long awaited, dear Capricorn. If you already are in love, you will likely grow closer this month. A baby may now be part of the plan, and conception may become more possible than any other time this year. Planets in Taurus are very fertile, and in the fifth house, even more so.

This part of your chart, glowing so brightly for you now, also rules artistic expression, and this month you have the ability to outdo yourself in the quality of work you turn out. This is a new moon solar eclipse, so it's possible that if you work in a creative field that a new and important project will materialize very soon, certainly within four weeks, if not much sooner. If you need to pitch a creative concept to a client or editor, do so immediately on May 10 or during the week of May 13 to 17.

On Friday, May 17, when Mars reaches 20 degrees Taurus, the degree of the eclipse, you may see the big message of the eclipse delivered, again, if it doesn't happen sooner. This is a key date to watch - notice the phone calls, emails that you receive, and social events that you attend, and most of all, the new people you meet on this day.

The fact that Mars is in Taurus, a sign that blends beautifully with your Capricorn Sun, and that Mars happens to be in your fifth house of romance too, is a clear sign that you must circulate! Be out and about at parties, and also professional events, like seminars, conferences, tradeshows, and business club events. This is a banner month to find love. Let friends make introductions for you, too. If they've been promising you that they would, tell your pals that they need to swing into action now, without delay. If you are attached, you can now engender greater closeness with the person you love. All Capricorns win this wonderful month of May!

Capricorn born on January 10, plus or minus five days, will be most directly affected by the eclipse and most likely to benefit from it. If you were not born in that part of Capricorn, and you have your natal chart, look to see if you have any planet at 20 degrees (plus or minus five degrees) of Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn - you will benefit, too. Second in line would be any planet at the same degree tolerance of Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces.

The next eclipse, a full moon lunar eclipse of May 25 will fall in your twelfth house in Sagittarius, 4 degrees. A secret may come out that you have held close, or someone else's secret may come out and surprise you. Neptune will be in hard angle to this eclipse, but that often means things are forced to the surface. If you sense that someone is not being altogether transparent with you, this is the time to poke around and see what you can find out. This same eclipse will have Uranus, planet of surprise, in perfect angle, so as you see, there are mixed aspects associated with this eclipse, and Uranus' contribution will bring sudden delight.

This same eclipse may cause you to talk over a problem with a friend or therapist. Full moons can be cleansing and liberating, for these powerful eclipsed moons can remove a difficult or painful element in your life. If you feel you need rehab or a therapist to help you end a bad habit, this eclipse would be the time to go for help. Neptune will be in hard angle to this eclipse, so you may want to talk over something that is not making sense to you to unravel the incongruent elements.

Now let's turn to your office life for a moment, for life is heating up there, with plenty of new assignments coming in now, and even more due to cross your desk next month. Take those assignments seriously, as you seem to be working toward a major promotion at month's end, or even more possible in October. Do your very best - VIPs appear to be noticing.

The month will end with two outstanding days.

The first will occur Monday, May 27, when Mercury and good fortune Jupiter will conjoin for the only time this year. This would be a fantastic day to travel, give a speech, or sign a contract. Mercury rules travel, news, and communication, so each of these areas will sparkle. In the US, May 27 will be Memorial Day weekend, a popular holiday, so travel will likely apply to you - do find a way to go out of town if you can. If you are not based in the US, then you may travel to see a client (or you may take the day off to treat yourself to a three-day weekend.) You might sign a contract or hand in an important written report. If asked to give a speech or lecture, this would be your day to get thundering applause.

Then, on the following day, Tuesday, May 28, Venus will conjoin with Jupiter and bring you praise for work well done. A project seems to be finishing up, and everyone all 'round will be very pleased. Remember I mentioned that you would be the apple of the eye of a VIP? On this day you see proof of this!

If you are unemployed, these days may help you find work. It won't likely be a step up from the work you used to be doing, but you would like the projects you do very much, and the office atmosphere will be very congenial. If you don't find the work at the end of May, June looks even more likely to bring the job you need. Keep up efforts - it appears you are closer than you think.

Also on these days, May 27 and 28, romance should prove to be very special. All 'round, Monday and Tuesday are outstanding - enjoy them!

As one of the zodiac's most talented leaders, you are a hardworking soul, and are always interested in getting ahead, moving patiently up the company hierarchy to the top. This month, you will be urged by a loving universe to push back from the computer, unplug your smart phone charger, and devote your time to love. With Venus, Mars, Mercury, the Sun, and new moon solar eclipse on May 9/May 10 all moving through your house of romance, you have the prospect of outstanding romantic opportunity. You've not seen anything like the planetary buildup that will happen in May in years!

If you don't make time for love, it will not happen, as you must show the universe that you want love, deserve love, and are willing to make time you need for love. In a month when your odds of meeting someone special will hit sky-high levels, it would be a shame not to harness the energy coming your way. You will notice that May is unlike any month you've seen in years, and the solar eclipse, May 9/10 will be powerful, friendly, and perfectly capable of opening up a new road for you in matters of the heart. Be sure to circulate as much as possible in May's first three weeks. If you are attached, you too will have fun with your one-and-only, so plan something fun for the two of you.

If you hope for a baby, the planets in Taurus will encourage conception. The moon, in itself, is associated with fertility, as is the sign of Taurus. With so many planets moving into Taurus now, you will have an exceptional chance to conceive or adopt a baby. Again, energy this outstanding is very rare - take full advantage if you hope for a baby. Whether you are interested in finding new love, having a baby, or spending more time with a child you have now, you could not choose a better month to enrich your private life.

The same planets that will bring your romance this month will also bring you a chance to make a name for yourself creatively. If ever you had a month to advance an idea or project, this will be it. Be sure to set aside time to work alone on your idea, for you'll surely have impressive results to show for your efforts later.

By the last week of May, the magical, romantic phase you experienced will fade, for the troop of planets moving through Taurus will move into Gemini, and your work life will get active. The lyrical atmosphere you enjoyed in the first three weeks of May will give way to more mundane concerns when a number of urgent projects and duties will come up. Until then, enjoy the enchanting spell of love that will envelop you during most of May. To celebrate the debut of Mad Men's sixth season, the editors at indie pop culture magazine PAPER called on me, Susan Miller, to do the natal horoscope charts of three of the show's main characters: Don Draper, Joan Holloway, and Peggy Olson, as show writers had clearly mentioned each of these particular character's birthday in the script during the course of the five seasons of the show. I was also asked to compare two charts for Don Draper - that of his actual biological birthday (when he was born Richard "Dick" Whitman) and that of the birth date he adopted after assuming the name and identity of 'Don Draper.'

I look the information and chose a birth city and time of birth for each of the three fictional characters. I did this based on bits and pieces of information revealed about each character over the show's many seasons. (Note that I did not do the charts of the actors who played the parts in Mad Men - that would have been an entirely different article. I focused only on the three fictional characters.)

In the past, I have been called on by Hollywood to collaborate with writers in character development because astrology, with its firm structure and fascinating layers of complexity, can show clearly the intricate shadings of personality. At the same time, I can help a writer maintain the integrity of the character. Astrology can be a rich source of fascinating information about a person's makeup - this is true whether the person is fictional or real.

To be clear, the Mad Men writers did NOT call on me in advance to help in character development for the show, although as I just mentioned, I have done this for other writers not connected to this show (and whose names will remain private). This was my first time to discuss a character AFTER the character's personality had been strongly developed over time!

This was a lot of fun. I not only looked at the personality of the three Mad Men characters, but when appropriate, I looked to the future to add some of my own ideas of what might come next for each character.
